Good Neighbours - Blue Sky Mentality
3-5 StarsMore like a collection of their hits rather than an album with its own specific creative arc.
In a way, it’s a bit of a shame that Good Neighbours’ debut didn’t land just a couple of weeks earlier, such are the summery vibes that flow through ‘Blue Sky Mentality’. After a truly rapid rise through the ranks over the past two years (not many acts can claim to bag an afternoon set on Reading and Leeds’ main stages just eighteen months after releasing their debut single), the first full-length from the London duo is as sunny and upbeat as its title alludes, bearing the fingerprints of early MGMT and Vampire Weekend’s more poppy nous. Granted, most of the record’s thirteen tracks have already been shared as singles - so it does feel more like a collection of their hits rather than an album with its own specific creative arc - but its cheery disposition is addictively fun all the same.
