Miso Extra - Earcandy

Very listenable, but not necessarily memorable.

Miso Extra - Earcandy

Miso Extra has been a flavoursome addition to the modern pop scene since the release of her 2021 debut single, ‘Aventures of Tricky N Duke’. Born in Hong Kong to a British father and a Japanese mother, Miso spent her childhood in Japan before relocating to the UK. This makes for a somewhat chaotic listen, but she ties it together with consistent and distinctive production - in this regard, she has definitely found ‘her sound’.

Matching this eclectic mix of genres is Miso’s ever-changing vocal; each song showcases a new voice - at times delicate and sweet, then pronounced and salty. This makes for a somewhat chaotic listen, but is tied together with consistent and distinctive production, of which she has definitely found ‘her sound’. This is most accomplished on sugary single, ‘Good Kisses’ (feat. Metronomy), which showcases the best of the artist’s gamified pop.

In fact, ‘Earcandy’ enlists a range of collaborators: DJ Boring, A.K. Paul and Tyson, the latter of whom features on ‘Candycrushin’ - another bubbling and fizzing highlight (as is squeaking electro track, ‘Slow Down’, which sounds like a smoothie blend of John Hopkins and TLC). As is squeaking electro track, ‘Slow Down’, which sounds like a smoothie blend of John Hopkins and TLC. Despite these definite fun moments, it’s missing the catchy melodies which, alas, are so needed in modern pop music. It’s very listenable, but not necessarily memorable: it may be ‘Earcandy’, but it’s lacking earworms.
