Tiny Masters Of Today – Skeletons

This how it’s done people. Lo-fi for the knee-high.

Let’s get this out of the way immediately. Tiny Masters of Today are young. Really young. Good, now that’s sorted let’s take a look at the group’s music. First up on ‘Skeletons’ (the brother/sister duo’s second album) there’s ‘Drop The Bomb’, which aside from the low in the mix vocals makes it very easy to forget that this is music made by kids. What we’ve got is fuzzy art-punk that’s really quiet clever. It’s then followed by ‘Two Dead Soldiers’ which puts the old nonsense verse to TMOD’s blend of punk.

The songs on the album fly by, with only ‘Big Stick’ (with its chorus of “Got a big stick / Gonna hit you with it”) being longer than three minutes. Hell the entire album is only 26 minutes, which means that you can listen to this album twice in your lunch break and still have time to eat your sandwich. This method comes quiet highly advised as Ivan and Ada’s exuberant energy actually rubs off on the listener.

Other great songs on ‘Skeletons’ include ‘Pop Chart’, which is insanely catchy, almost dancy and with it’s playground chant and simple language has the odd feeling of a punky J-Pop record. ‘Big Bass Drum’ deserves a mention also for adding an extra layer to TMODs simple punk rock, though combining said school-kid chants with electronic glitches. Our favourite however is ‘Ghost Star’, which takes ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’’s “oooh oooh’s” and puts them through the TMOD blender. It’s brilliant. This is punk music by kids for.. well, just about anyone - but especially kids

If we’re to criticise, which we feel we must, then towards the middle of the record to songs to begin to sound somewhat similar. It’s not a terrible thing, and thankfully this is picked up towards the end, such as the groove present on ‘Understandable Honesty’ and results in a satisfying little pop record. The fact that these two came up with a song title as good as ‘Abercrombie Zombie’ puts most adult’s to shame. This how it’s done people. Lo-fi for the knee-high.
