Before they were one, but now they are four. Guy Connelly (he of The Corrections and The Fallout Trust) has had something new on the go for a while, but now his new project is starting to take shape. Clock Opera now also comprises Dan Armstrong, Andy West and Che Albrighton - in a live setting at least.
It’s unknown whether this line-up will be incorporated into the recorded material. We’d be happy either way, because while we can imagine a ‘group’ sounding rather excellent, Connelly has no reason to stop flying solo - certainly not on the evidence of his new single, ‘A Piece of String’.
The Fallout Trust had quirkiness to burn, and this track recalls their more arresting material. Its main hook is a flute part. Yes, you read that correctly. Things are also sounding beefy in the percussion department, the driving tribal rhythms that underpin the track complementing it quite well. And then when it all kicks in with the arrival of scattershot drums, the song takes off.
Connolly has never been left wanting when it comes to diversity, and this song is an interesting taster of a route he could explore further. The hypothetical debut album would probably have this and ‘White Noise’ on it: two completely different songs, as good as each other. It’s a bit of a mouthwatering prospect.
