Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip - Cauliflower

Dancing beats and fun femme vocals guaranteed to prick ears.

Essex hip hop artists, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, split fans and critics alike with their 2008 debut, ‘Angles’. The digital dalliances of Le Sac combined with Scroobius’ witty writing skill may have been received like audio Marmite, but the Stanford-le-Hope duo pushed forth regardless, particularly on the live circuit, having performed their guts out for the past two years (with notable spots at Reading and Glasto). The band returned in March with their second album ‘The Logic of Chance’ - a record that was dealt similarly mixed opinion. Today we check out the latest single from the album - the colourfully named ‘Cauliflower’.

Gameboy synths drop heavy, rotating in the distance like electronic monsters, as Scroobius Pip’s vocals (if that incredible, Essex-clad spoken-word delivery can be considered vocals) throw out the speakers effortlessly.

Before the song gets too claustrophobic, Virginia artist Kid A comes along to guest on the single - her darling voice dancing around the crazily-hooky chorus like Tinkerbell, cooing “You’re all I want, you’re all I need, you are the one for me.” Icicle beats tinkle away in the distance, contrasting well with the crunchy overload of Pip’s monstrous tirades in the verses - who, may I add, keeps up the good work with his infamous novelty vocals, claiming ‘I fell in love with a girl from the city. Still got Cauliflower ears from when her voice first hit me.’

Still, it’s understandable why this band’s music is so prone to negative reviews. Half hour plus of Pip’s heckling rants would undeniably grate, but when compressed into a three minute single that spills with dancing beats and fun femme vocals guaranteed to prick ears, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip come out fighting.
