There is an undeniable buoyancy to Emilíana Torrini’s new single, ‘Me And Armini’, despite the dark subject matter at the heart of the song that features the twisted story of an obsessive stalker. The jaunty, 80s pop beat certainly helps elevate the track, as does Torrini’s sublime vocals, and add to that mix the chugging bass line and dynamic keyboard effects, and you have a swirling, hypnotic success. The real draw here is always going to be Torrini’s voice, and it soars above the bouncy musical arrangements, propelling the song forward into the bewitching chorus.
It’s an ambitious, overtly pop single, and is entirely sugar-coated without ever becoming saccharine. Dan Carey (Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip) handled the mix on this track, and his bubbly arrangement creates a sense of optimism that belies the eerie subject matter. And no matter how propulsive the track becomes, it never overshadows Torrini’s angelic vocals, which are placed in the center of the mix and remains the focus, no matter how many bells and whistles pop up.
