Girls bring out the very worst in us. The first five minutes planning out what we’re going to scribble about their pretty damn excellent EP ‘Broken Dreams Club’ consists entirely of bad puns. ‘Girls allowed!’, we’d proclaim - and everyone would laugh so hard they’d actually cry tears of blood.
And then we realised that actually, that would be stupid.
Girls, see, have shown themselves to be a Very Good Band. A band who hold attention, produce brilliant music and, as it turned out, could do very well thank you very much without ‘the backstory’. When push comes to shove, they probably don’t need our awful wordplay.
From the opening of ‘The Oh So Protective One’, which switches from Elvis Costello to Mariachi band and back again, to the ‘we wish the radio played more songs like this’ tones of ‘Heartbreaker’, there’s a thread to Girls’ brilliant debut, but a significant step forward too.
So, with slow stepping touches of country, blues and sun-stroked melancholia, the EP’s title track will probably inspire more hazy moments than it will destroy, while near eight minute closer ‘Carolina’ turns psychedelic haze into as close as Girls get to a full on stomper by it’s end.
If there’s one thing ‘Broken Dreams Club’ does prove, it’s that Girls should be allowed - allowed to do more like this. Sorry. We couldn’t resist.
