Field Music - Them That Do Nothing

A little bit like Wings being played by some art-pop pranksters.

Even though the side projects of the Brewis brothers have been critically acclaimed, the musical landscape without Field Music has been somewhat lacking. In them we have a completely unique and talented group whose absence has been highly noticed. Thankfully they’re back now with a fantastic new self titled album, sub-titled ‘Measure’ to avoid confusion with their debut, and this lead single from it, which is as smart as it is catchy.

To be perfectly honest, ‘Them That Do Nothing’ sounds a little bit like Wings being played by some art-pop pranksters. Nonetheless, any vague sonic comparisons to 1970’s rock groups are dispelled by the fact that whatever the inspirations this is a cracking song.

There’s a focus on the rhythm that shames most groups and the drums interact with the plucked guitars and are refreshingly used as a proper instrument. Likewise the bass guitar sound fantastic. Coming from a self-produced record this is even more astonishing and demonstrates that Peter and David Brewis’ talents extend far beyond just being fantastic musicians and songwriters.
