Frightened Rabbit - Nothing Like You

Yet another anthemic, indelible track from a band who have written plenty of them already in their short existence.

Selkirk’s Frightened Rabbit turn the volume up and get a bit loose on ‘Nothing Like You’, the raucous second single from forthcoming full-length, ‘The Winter Of Mixed Drinks’. It’s an undeniably catchy track that never eases up on the energy, with Scott Hutchison’s urgent vocals nearly outpacing the jaunty melody and propulsive rhythm of the band. It’s a strong and confident return for the Scottish group, and portends that great things are in store on their new record.

This is, at its heart, a kiss-off song, Hutchison boldly proclaiming that ‘she was not a cure for cancer… there is nothing like someone new, and this girl she was nothing like you’. So, the subject matter that Frightened Rabbit regularly mine - love/loss/longing/new beginnings - hasn’t changed all that much, but this is a bolder, more fully-realised sound for the band. There is a hint of the brazen universal appeal of Snow Patrol in the chorus, for good or for bad, but the song doesn’t get bogged down by that, or anything really, and chugs forward without apology or restraint. ‘Nothing Like You’ is a dynamic, exuberant song that is yet another anthemic, indelible track from a band who have written plenty of them already in their short existence. And, with the impending release of their stellar new album, we’re all bound to be raising our own mixed drinks in salute of another fine record from these loveable Scots.
