Disco. It brings to mind horrid memories of mobile DJs and their annoying ABBA saturated cheese-fests. Sadly Golden Silvers ‘True Romance’ helps these memories come to the surface and the only good thing that we find that we can really say about this infectious song is that is showcases Golden Silvers excellent changeling-like ability to do anything that they set their collective mind to.
Luckily the ‘Re-Fix’ that came on this CD is really rather ace. Lead on a staggered jittery keyboard line it filters the original’s disco through a ‘90’s dancefloor. This style lends itself better to the song, meanwhile the vocal/keyboard interplay helps to create an atmosphere and the songsmithery is allowed to shine.
With the lyrics “Stamp your post with penny blacks” Golden Silvers make this remix of ‘True Romance’ the only song that’s both philatelist and guaranteed to get you moving about the dancefloor, and if that’s not at least slightly subversive then we don’t know what is. You’re just advised to stay away from the disco version.
