Poor Katie Brien. Having to follow your debut single must be quite a daunting prospect. Especially when said single, ‘Katy On A Mission’, was one of the biggest crossover club anthems of 2010, produced by one of the most pioneering dubstep producers around, Benga.
So, somewhat unsurprisingly, ‘Lights On’ is a bit of a disappointment. Although the old-school house production is initially appealing, the actual track is unimaginative and becomes mind-numbingly repetitive. The addition of Ms Dynamite seems a strange choice too; whereas Benga undoubtedly played a massive role in the success of ‘Katy On A Mission’, Ms Dynamite seems to have very little input here at all.
Although ‘Lights On’ attempts to tick all the boxes, it ends up floundering somewhere in the bleak wasteland that lies in between ‘underground house banger’, and ‘chart-topping club classic’. According to her debut single, Katy B was ‘on a mission’, but, if ‘Lights On’ is anything to go by, she seems to have lost her way a little.
