Keaton Henson - Sweetheart, What Have You Done To Us
4 StarsIt’s indulgent - but in a way that works well.
Londoner Keaton Henson’s latest venture, ‘Sweetheart, What Have You Done To Us’ is incredibly moving, managing to pull emotions together using so few instruments; it’s really quite baffling how he does it. It’s channelled through his guitar, as it rises and falls in and out of the song, as the lyrics provide a perfect parallel to the deeply desolate music. It pulls you in and lets you go in a crescendo of echoed voices, guitars and smooth cello, leaving you wishing you could revel in it all over again, to revisit everything you just felt in the previous three-and-a-half minutes of bliss.
That’s the thing with Henson’s music, he didn’t intend on anyone outside his bedroom to hear it. That’s why it feels so intimate, so personal, because it’s indulgent - but in a way that works well. You’ll listen for hours on end, and then ask ‘well, one more time won’t hurt, will it?’.
