Miguel - Coffee
If anything’s officially ‘leading’ this new record as a first single, it’s best to start the day with ‘Coffee’.
Few things match the kick to system new Miguel material duly provides. Three tracks released at once in a mini set masquerading as an official ‘EP’ helped ease out 2014, paving way for the R&B superstar’s inevitable full strike in 2015. Best of the trio is ‘Coffee’, a caffeine hit that describes love in its finest, most hard-to-pin-down terms.
“We found a new religion,” he sings, two years on from announcing just about everything on 2012’s ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’. This time, feelings and emotions float by right before Miguel’s eyes. “I wish we could paint our love,” runs the opening line, as if he’s content with the strange ease at which everything’s flowing. Miguel’s strength is placing cheesy lines and straight-up feelings into different surroundings, ‘Coffee’ being the neatest example of this out of 2014’s late dash of new material. Abstract enough to meld into the background, simple enough to match the life stories of countless others, this is the sound of an LA star in fine form. If anything’s officially ‘leading’ this new record as a first single, it’s best to start the day with ‘Coffee’.
