Mr. Scruff - Feel It!
4 StarsYet another string to the electro jazz pioneer’s ever expansive bow.
Mr. Scruff returns to triumphant form with ‘Feel It!’, a stripped-back showcase of how a bearded northerner can magically emerge as and when he likes yet consistently spellbind listeners.
In his first release since 2009, Manchester’s finest takes no time in showing how his career has been allowed to span over several decades. In what can only be described as a move from jazzier pastures to the verge of eery lounge dance, a techno rhythm locks horns with a ghostly echo to reveal yet another string to the electro jazz pioneer’s ever expansive bow. This somewhat bizarre layering woven with a choppy, soulful vocal and a hypnotic pulse of deranged keys conjures up what should be a dissonant brew but in the context of Mr. Scruff blends seamlessly into one another.
Despite this questionable combination, each layer of ‘Feel It!’ has it’s own space to naturally coexist and, for some unknown reason, leaves you subconsciously wondering where Mr. Scruff has been for the last two years.
