were apparently formed on stage at the Sydney Opera House, after an improvisation session there at a festival blossomed into forming a band. Good job it did too – this is as fine an aural barrage of instrumental glitchy post-punk influenced noise you will hear all year.
The opening riff quickly descends into a kaleidoscope of deconstructive synth and scratchy guitar, enveloping your brain like the soundtrack to a sinister shoot-‘em-up where you are the victim. Their cited influences of Aphex Twin and Talking Heads are clear, and the juxtaposition of those two diverse acts to form this beautiful monstrosity demonstrates why Pivot could be an underground hit.
So too is it clear why they’ve toured Australia with the likes of Battles – the two share an experimental ethos, but whilst Battles aim for a more delicate, danceable vibe, these Australians prefer to take a more direct, confrontational approach. Who needs vocals when the music’s this good?
