Honking jazz solos and a Los Lobos understanding of rhythm, Psapp aren’t the typical ladies what lunch. So, you might question why ‘I Want That’ feels like the Sex and the City theme tune revamped? Interrupted by the squawking saxophones, there are still the hints of a descending scaling piano, rotating guitars and lounge music.
Distortions of Manhattan aside, ‘I Want That’ slinks its way around a glossy organ centre, given it’s freedom only when we enter the three minute marker. Chiming together the Psapp ladies’ soulless ‘Lalalala, I want that!’ is a kitsch staple to the song, showing that they share more than just a fleeting association with Carrie and co.
The squealing saxophone between verses gives a decidedly disjointed piece to this otherwise tightly pinched puzzle of instruments. The shuffling minimalised rhythm section does little to branch out and although not stunning, Psapp have made an alarmingly cheeky wink towards seduction and entrapment with this track.
