This Northampton seven-piece seemingly harbour aspirations to be the UK’s answer to My Morning Jacket. This, the lead single from debut long-player ‘Best Loved Goodnight Tales’, falls short of that admirable goal. Instead, they come across as maybe a tad too earnest and knowingly twee, their breezy melodies dampened by production values that can’t help but head worryingly close to Air Traffic gone ‘epic’.
That said there are no immediate reference points for the fare that TANAOU peddle, at least not domestically based, means they remain an interesting proposition. There are signs here that they may come across better on stage; still, this is inoffensive enough radio fodder, and their forthcoming album may yield surprises.
