Not that anyone probably cares but The Duke Spirit have a new single out and it’s really quite good. Scouts!
If you’ll remember about 400 years ago in 2004 when the world was flat and Pete Doherty didn’t look quite so repulsive, The Duke Spirit were another half-heartedly tipped act producing solid if unremarkable murky guitar pop. Cut to 2008 however and they’ve turned out ‘My Sunken Treasure’, a luscious, fun Northern Soul stomper that’s basically Patrick Wolf’s The Magic Position with a better chorus.
Frontwoman Liela Moss’ vocals are especially great, doing that whole heavy, vulnerable talk/singing thing Scandinavian pop starlets have appropriated lately. Actually, hand this to Lykke Li and Jo Whiley could probably get it to number one – it’s that kind of track.
True, it rather runs of ideas near the end and their other new material seems to suggest The Duke Spirit haven’t quite let go of not being as good as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs just yet, but of all the millions of singles that will be totally ignored this year, this should go down as one of the best.
