As catchy as a cold, and if you’ve seen a car advertisement recently you’ll agree just as irritating. But then again, that is precisely what advertisers work on – quick to latch onto hooks, the best part of the song, the drill with which they can sufficiently tap into your brain until the brand and the song and the image are inseparable.
Attempting to treat this as a separate entity proves somewhat enlightening with the verses effervescing funk a lot more than the snippet gives them credit for. The first swings into action with a free wheeling bassline operating at heart-rate propulsion.
Sadly, post-overfamiliar chorus the second verse smarts of its own smugness: it’s never a wise choice to marry “can’t get home” with “dog and bone”. Putting it frankly ‘Don’t Upset The Rhythm’ is a silly song, 80s gazing wishing it were even half as alluring as Boney M. And yet, if you can disengage that brain rot that the box has induced you could find yourself throwing shapes, singing: “Go baby! Go baby! Go!” along wildly and taking it for the fun that it is.
