The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Come Saturday

Good songs will always win out in the end.

‘Come Saturday’

, the new single from Brooklyn’s The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, shrouds itself in fuzzed out guitars reminiscent of the Stone Roses and the sweet, blissful warbles of vocalist Kip Berman, but at its heart the song is just about fucking, at least according to Berman. The trials of a long distance relationship are chronicled throughout the song’s verses, but the chorus explodes with the passion and intensity of two young lovers finally getting a chance to see each other again-not caring if there is a party somewhere, they decide to stay in. There are double entendres galore, within both the song’s title and lyrics alluding to a lover that gets to ‘come to stay,’ and ‘come again and again and again.’ But despite the rather simplistic and salacious nature of the subject matter, the song still works due to the driving beat, massive guitars and the overall sanguine mood of the track. It’s a falling in love in the summer song for the indie set, and the world doesn’t seem to ever have enough of those.

Musically, the band owes a lot of the sound and style to UK bands, whether it’s in the toned down wall of guitar sound of the Jesus and Mary Chain, or in the bold typeface and stark photographs of women that grace their sleeves which are reminiscent of Belle and Sebastian. There’s so much influence from across the pond that it’s hard to believe the band is actually from Brooklyn. But indeed they are a New York band through and through, with subtle musical nods to bands as diverse as Black Tambourine and My Bloody Valentine. The influences are easy to spot, but their songs are so strong and inherently catchy that you really won’t care if you’ve heard something like it before. Good songs will always win out in the end, and in the case of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, it’s best to just listen along and fall in love while you still can.
