Toro Y Moi - So Many Details
Chaz Bundick’s returning effort is suitably distracting, full of tiny little novelties seemingly too far from reach. But once it all clicks, goodness it’s exciting.

The title of Chaz Bundick’s returning effort makes no hasty introduction. Its title is finite and does anything but belie the truth. Chopping formula into various intriguing bits and pieces, Toro Y Moi is continuing his rapid ascent as one of our most beloved experimentalists with ‘So Many Details’.
It’s a mish-mash of several interconnecting ideas, all of which, when combined, throw you off course. Some might argue Bundick works best when keeping things simple and timeless, a la. ‘Blessa’ and ‘Still Sound’, but it’s easy to forget that the latter of these two came out of the blue, exposing an entirely new palette of sound for the producer. ‘So Many Details’ is similarly distracting in its sheer novelty, but after a few listens everything slots into place, every previously conflicting element feels like it belongs. And once it all clicks, goodness it’s exciting.
These details, in all their fruitful supply, range from harsh guitar patterns bereft of effects, a fluttering backdrop of squeaky synth patterns, and gentle xylophone key sections you might usually stumble across in lift music. Chaz’s vocals prevent the whole piece from spilling its overflowing ideas out into the gutter. And while it veers into way-too-showy territory, it’s in keeping with the Toro Y Moi ethos, of ripping up the rulebook on every possible occasion.
Toro Y Moi’s new album, ‘Anything In Return’, is out 21st January through Carpark Records.
