Introducing Get To Know… Orchards
The Brighton band have just shared new song ‘Mature Me’.
Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… With two new acts a week, the feature pretty much does what it says on the tin: getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.
We’ve recently introduced you to BLANc, the new project from former Maccabees touring member Will White, Brighton’s DITZ, New York’s Gus Dapperton, Spanish/London duo Family Time, and punk-funkers Public Practice. Next up, we’re with Orchards.
The alt-pop four-piece from Brighton recently played our stage at New Colossus festival in New York before heading over to play SXSW and they’ve just released new track ‘Mature Me’ after completing a UK tour.
“Mature Me is about learning that you’re better than your past—that you can and will grow through everything,” explains vocalist Lucy Evers of the track, which you can listen to below.
Get to know Orchards a bit better with our Q&A below.
Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.
Spend an evening with us and you can expect to be instantly blown….away (lol) followed by 3 and a half minute bursts of passionate and energetic ear lovin’ finished with a tender hug at the merch desk.
What’s your earliest musical memory?
Lucy and Daniel’s is dancing round their respective living rooms listening to Santana based classic rock. Will and Sam’s is listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magik in their Dad’s respective cars.
Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?
At the beginning it centred around Incubus, Tangled Hair, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and now it’s grown to be bands like Everything Everything, Foals, Bloc Party, we all have such a vast array of musical loves it’s so hard to pinpoint.
You’re based in Brighton - what’s the music scene like there at the moment? Are there other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?
There’s a bunch! Penelope Isles, we recently saw them in SXSW and they blew us away! Twilight Driving, CLT DRP, Libra Libra + so many more. I think the thing with Brighton is everything does their own thing completely disregarding social expectations. Everyone makes music they love. That’s inspirational in itself.
Who would be your dream collaborator?
We think Everything Everything x Haim x Orchards would make beautiful beautiful things together.
Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to in 2019?
Currently we are sitting eating vegan burgers in Manchester on the second date of our first headline tour. This is something we have been looking forward to this for the longest time! And we’ve just arrived back from our first American shows. 2019 has treated us pretty well so far. But we are also going to be doing our first European festivals in Switzerland + Luxembourg, that’s going to be insane. That and a spot of recording, 2019 is shaping up to be our most exciting year yet.
If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?
To leave a show happier than when they arrived possibly with some new pals. Or to just lift their spirits. We make music to make your smile.
