News Two Wounded Birds

Johnny Danger, the band’s frontman, gives us the low-down.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed a couple of weeks ago we premiered a video for a new Moshi Moshi band called Two Wounded Birds.

The track, taken from their forthcoming ‘Midnight Wave’ single, was called ‘All We Wanna’ and is due out as part of a single package on 18th April.

Johnny Danger, the band’s frontman, gives us the low-down - in between drinking Coca Cola and working on some new songs.

Your newest release, ‘All We Wanna Do’ / ‘Midnight Wave’, will be out soon. Were the two songs really both recorded in single takes?
Yes they were! I didnt go in thinking ‘oh we have to record them really quickly,’ but I think it’s important with the basic drum and bass takes to get a good feel, good bouncy vibe and it just so happens with these two we got great results first time. It sounds more real that way, rather than playing it a hundred times and resenting it by the end. It doesn’t always work so quickly though.

How did you hook up with Moshi Moshi for the release? Was it via your support tour with The Drums?
Moshi saw us last year when we played a show with The Drums and we’ve been in touch ever since. They liked our songs we wanted to follow up the debut EP on Holiday Records with. It’s all good.

What impact did the tour have on your development? Was it a good learning experience?
It was a great experience for us, we had never been on any tour so to go round Europe and the UK and play great venues was great for us. We learnt quickly cos we had to, it felt like we upped our game every night. It’s a lot of fun. Can’t wait for the next one.

You commented in an interview that you’d like to release a string of singles, then an album of new material. That sounds quite ambitious?
I’m the most ambitious person, I don’t have creative droughts. I like the idea of a band releasing songs and then an album of new material. I’m not against putting singles on a record, but it’s nice to get a new record with lots of things you havent heard on there. It’s nice as well, if you follow or collect band’s 7’s, CD’s or downloads, it makes each one worth getting rather than buying something that you already have on another format without any new material.

Have you much material for your debut album in the bag already?
Yes. There are quite a few songs that I’ve completed that will make the album, and some that are kind of sitting there that I don’t know what to do with. I have an idea of where certain tracks are going to go on the album already, and I’m just adding new songs to the list of potential other tracks.

A lot of the music styles and films you name check as influences seem quite old. Is it a reaction to the flippancy of current trends?
It’s just something that we are into, a certain style or taste I suppose. We are not harking back to older stuff for the sake of it, it’s stuff we love and get off on.

Is there any new music you do like at the moment?
Yeah, we like a band we heard the other day, The Severed Limbs. The Vaccines record is great. London band Dirty Hands have got it going on too.

Two Wounded Birds’ single ‘All We Wanna Do’ / ‘Midnight Wave’ will be released on 18th April via Moshi Moshi Singles Club.
