Animal Collective Broadcast Second Transmission

The second edition of Centipede Hz. was fronted by newly returned band member Deakin.

Animal Collective promised DIY something ‘harmonious with the vibe of the album, just really fun’ when we spoke to them a while back, and you can’t get more original than the band’s 4 week radio station Centipede Hz, which goes out at 2am (GMT) every Sunday until the album’s release.

Titled after the forthcoming album, due 3rd of September, the station is hosted by a different band member each time. Last week saw Panda Bear unveil ‘Today’s Supernatural’, the first preview from ‘Centipede Hz’; this week was the turn of newly returned member Deakin. Spinning everything from Micachu & the Shapes to our new personal favourite ‘Orgullo’ by Las Grecas, Deakin (along with a little help from Turquoise Wisdom, DoodCast and Pantha Du Prince) delved even deeper into the world of psychedelic music.

There were sadly no new cuts from the album this time round, but Deakin and Co. produced an entertaining and diverse sound collage. Far from being a silly promotional gimmick, Centipede Hz. is well worth a listen - you can catch up using an embeddable on-demand player, or stream the show in the following 24 hours on the website

If you fancy having a go at some late night pirate radio yourself, the ‘You Mix’ section of the website gives further details. The band even provide a downloadable package of space-age sounds to help you get started. As part of ‘The Creators Project’, Animal Collective are keen to get people making mixes, with their favourite shows winning test press vinyls of ‘Centipede Hz.’
