Anna Calvi joins forces with Perfume Genius for arresting cover of ‘I See A Darkness’
“When I sing someone else’s words, I feel like I’m getting closer to myself somehow.”

Anna Calvi has made a striking musical return with new track ‘I See A Darkness’ - a re-interpretation of Bonnie Prince Billy’s 1999 number, recorded alongside Perfume Genius.
The release marks the start of an eagerly-anticipated new chapter for Calvi, whose last studio album, ‘Hunter’, came out in 2018. Since then, she’s shared 2020’s ‘Hunted’ - a rework of its predecessor - and scored seasons five and six of the hit BBC drama Peaky Blinders.
Speaking about her decision to cover ‘I See A Darknes’, Calvi has observed: “so many songs are about romantic love. But I wanted to highlight the romance of the chosen family, the depth of connection that isn’t tethered to heteronormative ideals. It’s such a powerful song about the yearning for intimacy.
“I love inhabiting other people’s songs. When I sing someone else’s words, I feel like I’m getting closer to myself somehow, because the songs I choose express something I can’t articulate.”
