Bono discusses “difficult recovery” following New York bike accident

Singer says: “I came off a push bike and smashed myself to bits. There is no glory here.”

Bono has spoken for the first time about injuries sustained after a bike accident which happened in 2014.

The U2 frontman crashed his cycling bike in New York’s Central Park back in November. He then had to undergo emergency surgery, suffering serious injuries.

In a post on the band’s official website, he stated that: “Recovery has been more difficult than I thought.”

He went on to say that “it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. It feels like I have somebody else’s hand, I can’t bend these, and this is like rigor mortis,” he said, in a video statement. “But they say that nerves heal about a millimeter a week, so in about 13 months I should know if it’s coming back.”

Explaining the incident, he said: “I really used to think that my head was harder than any surface it came in contact with, and I don’t anymore. I didn’t come off a Harley-Davidson. I came off a push bike and smashed myself to bits. There is no glory here.”

U2 will play six nights at London’s O2 Arena - 25th, 26th, 29th, 30th October and 2nd & 3rd November. They then play two nights at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, 6th and 7th June.
