Cameron Avery of Tame Impala details debut solo album ‘Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams’

Tame Impala bassist and founding member of Pond Cameron Avery shared the single ‘C’est Toi’ last year, and with Tame Impala taking a bit of a break he’s announced plans for a debut solo album.

‘Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams’ is out via Anti- on 10th March and has been self-produced by Cameron. He says that he wanted to harness the power of old classics that he loved, including records by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Etta James.

He’s also documenting the trials and tribulations of modern romance, saying in a statement: “I figured: I’m in my mid-20s, I play in a band, I live in Los Angeles—I’m ripe to dream. But the pipe dream, the underlying theme of the album, if you really listen, is that all I really want is to have someone in my life and to be in love.”

His brand new single ‘Wasted On Fidelity’ brings some of those frustrations into view, with Cameron exploring the space left behind in the wake of a breakup with lush, panoramic tones.

Cameron explained what inspired the track: “My mindset at the time was that the only way I could provide happiness for myself is if I paid for it.” Er, alright… “The lyric says, ‘I gave myself to the sure things’; if I bought a beer, or a whiskey, or other such indulgences I got to consume them…But it’s kind of a dark mindset when you think about it: attempting to buy happiness.” Oh okay, that clears that up then.
