Dave Longstreth releases new orchestral composition ‘Michael Jordan’

The Dirty Projectors mastermind composed the piece for Le Poisson Rogue, and Mica Levi also contributed ‘Aroura’.

Aside from working with Paul McCartney, Kanye West and Rihanna on ‘FourFiveSeconds’ - which is, y’know, no biggy or anything - Dave Longstreth has been fairly quiet for the past few years. Recently, though, he’s been flexing his classical muscles, and he’s composed a new piece for New York orchestral ensemble Le Poisson Rogue.

‘Michael Jordan’ - presumably a homage to the iconic basketball player - is a four-movement arrangement written for a double string quartet. Though it’s a slightly different venture for Longstreth, its rooted in the same off-kilter foundations as Dirty Projectors. The violins plunk and reverberate all over the shop, carving out strange patterns. Like everything Longstreth writes, it’s bizarrely beautiful.

Listen to ‘Michael Jordan’ below, along with ‘Aroura’, which Michachu & the Shapes’ Mica Levi contributed to the project.
