English Teacher are back with a re-recorded version of ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’
The Leeds quartet have also shared details of their biggest UK tour yet.
Following the release of their 2022 debut EP ‘Polyawkward’ and Speedy Wunderground single ‘Song About Love’ earlier this year, English Teacher have today returned with a re-recorded version of an older cut, ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’.
Of the track, the band’s vocalist, guitarist and synth player Lily Fontaine has said: “I wrote and recorded the demo in my bedroom in one day, during my final year of university in 2018. Moving to a city for university forced me to reflect on how my experience of growing up in and around Pendle, how witnessing the social, economic and political issues that exist around there in juxtaposition with the beauty of the landscape and the characters that live within in it, has shaped me into the artist and person that I am. These semi-rural stories leak into most of my writing; in particular, this song tackles delusions of grandeur and inferiority from the perspective of a small town’s local celebrities. It’s split into two halves.”
You can read more about Lily’s experiences as an artist from Northern England in our feature here, which explores the industry’s London-centrism and the hugely negative impact of this month’s BBC Introducing closures.
After concluding their festival run with appearances at Reading & Leeds festivals at the end of the month, English Teacher will be hitting the road once more this autumn to play what will be their biggest UK tour to date.
