Formation talk brilliant festival crowds: “They’re there for the music”

The duo will be making their first festival appearance of the year at Live at Leeds tomorrow.

Over the last twelve months, London duo Formation have been serving up slices of revolutionary party pop with relish. Now, having already been part of DIY’s Class Of 2016, Will and Matt Ritson are about to embark upon a summer of festivals to bring their cowbell-clanging anthems to the people, as they lead up to releasing their debut album later this year.

Kicking off their festival season in style at Live at Leeds, the band will be hitting the stage at The Belgrave tomorrow evening. In the meantime, catch up with Will’s favourite festival choice, the set that changed his life, and his golden rule when it comes to being a punter.

Hello! Which is your favourite festival to play (and why)?
Calvi On The Rocks in Corsica - it was so hot and we were very well looked after. I mean, we wore our swimming trunks on stage!

What was the one festival you’d go to growing up regularly?
I didn’t really go to many of the big festivals growing up, but was always a fan of the smaller, local festivals that got the community dancing together.

Has there been one particular set you saw at a festival that was life-changing (or just, like, particularly memorable for whatever reason)?
Nine Inch Nails at Reading during their Lights In The Sky tour, if you have seen it you will know why.

What’s the best thing about playing to a festival crowd?
They’re there for the music.

What’s the worst thing to have happened to you at a festival – either as gig-goer or artist (with info!)?
Having to leave a festival early to head to another show, being in a mad rush, loading out our gear in the rain and not getting to watch QOTSA.

And… you’re gonna have practised this one, right? Your #1 top festival tip.
Don’t be a dickhead. Look out for each other.

Formation play at Live at Leeds tomorrow (30th April).
