Reel love:
Kelsey Lu and Shabazz Palaces feature in a new short film by Khalil Joseph
‘Music Is My Mistress’ is the latest work from the man behind Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ visuals.
Remember how amazing the visuals accompanying Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’
were? Course you do. Well, the man behind the magic is at it again!
Khalil Joseph was the brains behind Queen B’s epic “visual
album”, and he’s also the man behind last year’s video installation by Kendrick
Lamar. He’s now back with a new short film, ‘Music Is My Mistress’, which features
cellist and singer Kelsey Lu, Jesse Williams, Tracie Ellis Ross and Ish, as
well as music from experimental hip hop outfit Shabazz Palaces.
Created in collaboration with fashion chain Kenzo and
Annapurna, the film is a non-linear voyage that follows different characters as
they go about their lives within an artistic and abstracted vision of life.
Kenzo said in a statement: “The film an amalgamation of rhythms, visions and
moods that eschews narrative continuity in favor of divergent glimpses into a
bigger story.” It certainly does that, and the results are more than a bit
intriguing.
