Mae Muller makes bold first step on ‘After Hours’ EP

The newcomer gives us a track-by-track rundown of the new collection, today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Mae Muller.

Today’s Neu Pick comes from London newcomer Mae Muller, and her debut EP ‘After Hours’. A bold, confident first step, the five-track collection feels like a potential chart-mingler from first listen.

The EP opens with its title track, a breathy, slinky cut which is atmospheric in the extreme, the singer’s vocals flitting between reverb-backed melodies and a sung-rapped hybrid.

‘B.B.A.’, meanwhile, is a brighter, dancefloor-bound bop, while ‘Baby Girl’ sees the EP off in restrained, gorgeous fashion.

“I just want to make people really feel” explains the singer of the new EP in a press release.

“If they want to laugh, cry, dance, or smile, they can hopefully listen to one of my songs & it works for them, as that’s how the inspiration from the music I make comes from.”

In addition to the EP stream, Mae Muller has given us an exclusive track-by-track guide to the five tracks that make up ‘After Hours’.

Stream the EP and read the track-by-track commentary below.

After Hours

I wanted to write a really sensual and soft song, but then put it over the top of a hard trap beat, because I feel like that juxtaposition works really well. It’s a love song with an element of mystery, and I always imagine myself riding through the desert in a drop top convertible when I listen to it.

The Hoodie Song

This is a song that just makes you feel all lovey. It’s what you listen to when you’re not doing anything other than lounging around, in comfy clothes, chilling with your boo.

Jenny

This song is real playful. Most songs that are about break ups can be quite sad but I just wanted to turn it on its head, and make a negative situation in to something positive. It’s a song which makes you feel good while singing it!

BBA

This one is for the girls! It’s about the doubles standard between men and women and how so many girls get backlash for doing things that boys do all the time. It’s a feel good song which you can have a dance to, and really get your sass on.

Baby Girl

This song is pretty much what I needed to hear while I was growing up. I wanted girls to realise that so many women go through heart break, and toxic relationships, and that they’re not alone. It will hopefully allow the listener to realise their worth.
