True to himself
Morrissey pens anti-BRIT Awards essay
‘Bogus’ ceremony comes under fire.
Hot on the heels of Kanye West’s anti-Beck, pro-Beyoncé rant at last Sunday’s Grammy Awards, perpetual miserablist Morrissey has come out in solidarity with the rapper by offering a similarly defamatory assessment on the forthcoming BRIT Awards in the form of an essay uploaded to fan site ‘True To You’.
With the glitzy shindig set to take place on 25th February, the ex-Smiths man was in a far-from-celebratory mood as he posted the wordy diatribe- entitled ‘Music Awards Are None Of Your Business’- to the web page late last night.
Barely stopping to pause for breath over 1300 words, the bilious statement attacks the institution’s practice of handing awards to ‘pop artists of untested stature or value’, singles out ‘Taylor Swift’ and ‘MacDonna’ as contributing to the demise of contemporary British music and suggests that the ceremony itself is merely a front for “the strongest labels to gather and share out awards” to the “artists they plan to heavily promote in 2015.”
