Watch My Bloody Valentine play a new song at Meltdown Festival

The band played their first shows in five years across the weekend.

My Bloody Valentine returned to the stage for the first time in half a decade this weekend, playing a warm-up show in Birmingham on Friday night, and then the ongoing Robert Smith-curated Meltdown Festival in London.

At the second show, the band debuted a new song, which sounds as intense and unrelenting as they’ve become known for.

The band have been teasing the release of a new album (or maybe “a sprawling EP” as Kevin Shields puts it), which would be their first since 2013’s ‘mbv’.

“Oh, we one hundred percent will,” Kevin Shields told Pitchfork when asked if a new record from the band was set to come out in 2018.

Shields went on to describe the process of working on the record: “Basically, the record started off as an EP, and I realized it has to be, like, a mini-album, because it’s going to be at least 40 minutes long.

“So it’s going to be an album, but I don’t really know how many tracks it’s going to be. It’ll probably be seven or eight, by the looks of it.”

He then called the album “a sprawling EP”, saying: “It’s more like I’m making an EP, but I don’t want to be constrained to four songs or a certain length or anything. It’s really an EP but it’s a sprawling EP. I’m going to do a couple of them before I do an album”.

The band are set to play a European festival show at next month’s Roskilde, before heading out for a run of US headline dates.
