Pale Waves, Sigrid, Superorganism and more announced for the BBC Sound of 2018 longlist

Rex Orange County, Nilüfer Yanya and Alma are also among those to get the nod.

This year’s BBC Sound of longlist has been announced, with solo artists still ruling the roost.

Holding up the side for the bands are DIY faves (and Class of 2018 cover stars) Pale Waves, who got the nod alongside much-hyped transatlantic troupe Superorganism - making up the only two groups to feature on the 16-strong list.

Elsewhere, the range of soloists featured in the poll - which has been won in previous years by Sam Smith, Years & Years, Jack Garrett and more - largely come from the pop and r’n’b world, with Sigrid, Nilüfer Yanya and Alma featuring alongside Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi and the more soulful sounds of Surrey boy Rex Orange County.

US singer Khalid is also eligible to win, despite having had a platinum single in America with debut ‘Location’ and racking up nearly 1.5 million Twitter followers, as rules for entry state that artists must only have not had a Top 10 track in the UK.

The list is voted for by a panel of selected music industry figures.

The full list of BBC Sound of 2018 longest nominees are:
