Royal Blood slay Glastonbury 2014 with heavy riffage
A snarling beast that defies the suggestion that a bit of heavy riffage doesn’t belong on Worthy Farm.
Yesterday Glastonbury was hit by an electrical storm. Today its being battered again, but not from the heavens. Royal Blood’s thumping noise is far from holy. Dragging itself from the local hellhole by its bloodied fingernails, ‘Come On Over’ is the snarling beast that defies the suggestion that a bit of heavy riffage doesn’t belong on Worthy Farm.
Not that Royal Blood are doing anything so polite as to set the stage for tonight’s headliners Metallica. The Brighton two piece are far too direct for that. ‘Figure It Out’ rides the express train straight to arena sized stadium rock, refusing to be confined by the mere physicality of any puny tent; ‘Little Monster’ stalks for pray, hungry for some muddy Glastonbury goer’s guts.
“I’ve got to be honest, this is blowing our fucking minds,” is as close to audience interaction as Royal Blood come. They don’t have time for charisma, one liners or a winning smile to own the crowd. They use brute force - a crowbar to the heart, before long the place is jumping, a pit has formed. ‘Out of the Black’ provokes a standing ovation before a final, brutal finishing move ends it all. Royal Blood win. Flawless victory.
