Sam Smith almost missed out on Band Aid 30 because he’s scared of unknown numbers

He may be taking the international stage by storm, but saucy warbler Sam Smith still faces the odd hurdle from time to time. Like when someone tries to ring him from a withheld number.

Ahead of his appearance on tonight’s Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Sam has revealed that he almost missed out on his chance to perform on Band Aid 30 (which has gone on to become the fastest selling single of the year) after organiser Bob Geldof rang him from an unknown number.

“I don’t pick up unknown numbers, I hate unknown numbers” revealed the ‘Stay With Me’ crooner, “so he rang me and I immediately gave the phone to my band mate cause I can’t pick up unknown numbers.”

In a classic case of brilliant backstage banter, said band mate “picked up and started making funny noises down the phone”.

Ever the stoic charity-man, Geldof apparently simply stated his name. “I was like ‘shit!’” Sam confessed. “We had a nice conversation, he’s a lovely guy.”

At the time of writing, it is unknown just how many PPI repayments Sam Smith has missed out on.
