The Blackout: ‘Fan Funding Allowed Us To Make The Album We Wanted’

The Blackout’s latest album ‘Hope’ was recorded using money raised through Pledgemusic and released through Cooking Vinyl.

In a recent interview with DIY, Gavin & Matthew explained why fan-fundraising worked out so well for the Welsh band.

‘It was the right thing for the right time for where we were,’ Gavin began. ‘You can keep control of everything because obviously you won’t have a label coming in and saying you need two poppier songs or three heavier songs. You can make the album that you want to make.’

Matthew continued, ‘It just gave us the power to do what we wanted to do without any external influences. No one telling us what not to do, it was just us doing what we wanted to do.’

But as for whether they’ll ever consider doing it again, the band haven’t yet decided: ‘If we do it, it won’t be for a while. Just for the fact that all the kids will be like, “Oh, there they are again, milking us.”’ Matthew explained.

The Blackout will be performing on the Main Stage at Reading & Leeds this summer and have recently announced an autumn tour.
