Romy drops powerful, “proudly queer” single ‘Love Who You Love’

It’s the cherry on the cake of her debut solo album ‘Mid Air’.

The xx's Romy drops powerful, "proudly queer" single 'Love Who You Love'

Dance-pop stalwart Romy has returned to share ‘Love Who You Love’, a moving new song that acts as a sonic and thematic underscoring of her acclaimed 2023 solo LP ‘Mid Air’

Co-produced by Romy herself alongside BloodPop and bandmate Jamie xx, it’s a track which was first conceived of five years ago, back in 2020. Describing ‘Love Who You Love’ as “a proudly queer love song,” she has explained that “it was also really important to me to acknowledge that the world is STILL such a challenging place for so many of us to show our love openly in the LGBTQ+ community.”

Continuing, she notes: “In reaction to that I wanted to write a song that not only celebrates and uplifts love as well as calls for change. The history of resilience and togetherness in the face of unbelievable challenges within the community is so powerful. Personally, finding friends, family and people I look up to and learn from - through queer clubbing - has made me feel so much less alone and braver in so many aspects of life. These experiences and the people I’ve met, continue to be so inspiring to the music I’m making and this song intends to be a love letter of visibility and pride. No one can take the love you feel away from you — it’s yours.”

Excitingly, Romy has also recently confirmed that she’s been back in the studio with Jamie xx and Oliver Sim, the trio having reunited to make new music as The xx. Watch this space for more on that… and in the meantime, check out the video for ‘Love Who You Love’ below.
