Hurrah!
TOPS return with new track ‘Petals’
Their new album ‘Sugar At The Gate’ is out in June!
Back in 2014, Montreal’s TOPS released their excellent album
‘Picture You Staring,’ but we haven’t heard much from them since.
That is, until now! The band have announced plans to release
their new album ‘Sugar At The Gate’ on 2nd June via Arbutus, which was
apparently recorded in LA at a particular spot called “Glamdale,” a
mini-mansion and former brothel in the Glendale area.
Jane Penny talked to Gorilla vs. Bear about what it was like
to set up camp on the West Coast: “Living in LA was living out a teenage
fantasy, living with your band and practicing in the garage. It was also the
first time we’ve ever had that much space to make music. I took the experience
of living LA as a challenge to make music that I know is real to me, in the
sense of it feeling true and containing true feelings, but also recordings of
great songs, the real thing.”
As a taster of what to expect from the ten-track collection,
the band have also shared ‘Petals,’ a glimmering blend of soft indie and funk
licks and the same kind of relatable lyrics we’ve come to love them for (“got a
phone full of numbers and a list full of names/ no one to call”).
Check out ‘Petals’ and the tracklisting for ‘Sugar At The
Gate’ below.
