U2 unveil album art for ‘Songs of Innocence’ release

Surprise release is officially coming out this October on three formats.

Three weeks on from its surprise release, U2’s ‘Songs of Innocence’ album now has some official artwork (which can be updated in iTunes automatically, presumably).

The striking cover depicts the band’s drummer Larry Mullen Jr. clutching onto the waist of his son.

Explaining the artwork in a statement, Bono says: “We’ve always been about community in U2, about family and friends.”

“’Songs Of Innocence’ is the most intimate album we’ve ever made. With this record we were looking for the raw, naked and personal, to strip everything back.”

‘Songs if Innocence’ was initially released for free on the launch of Apple’s keynote speech. Some users reported to have the album pushed onto their iCloud devices without being prompted.

Following the release, Bono claimed that a subsequent U2 album (tentatively titled ‘Songs of Experience’) would flip the rulebook and essentially save the music industry. He’s promising “an audiovisual interactive format for music that can’t be pirated and will bring back album artwork in the most powerful way, where you can play with the lyrics and get behind the songs when you’re sitting on the subway with your iPad or on these big flat screens. You can see photography like you’ve never seen it before.”

‘Songs of Innocence’ is officially released on 13th October in digital, deluxe and 2xLP. Pre-order here.
