Watch: Gem Club Unveil ‘Polly’ Video

Closing track on Gem Club’s ‘In Roses’ lives up to its emotional billing with a sob-worthy video.

As if this song could get any more upsetting. ‘Polly’ - the closer to Gem Club’s Hardly Art record ‘In Roses’ - is as clear as day in its intentions, an emotional outpouring that doesn’t let slip. Its accompanying video (directed by Matthew Salton and Charlie Engman) is slightly less direct than the constant call of ‘Polly, I need you now that you’re gone.’ Instead of loss being the focus, it latches onto issues of identity, as an elderly woman tries costume after costume in an attempt to become another person.

The meaning behind the song, as Christopher Barnes explained in a DIY interview, is as follows:

Polly was my Aunt. It’s about who she was before she was sick, and who she was after she was sick. The idea is about how our bodies betray us, and how sickness can rob us of who we are.’
