You Me At Six: “We might be darting about on some other stages”

The band’s Max Helyer hints at a more secret appearance at this year’s Reading 2014.

You Me At Six are fast becoming staples of the Reading and Leeds line-up. Having graced the weekender with their presence four times already, in just the last six years - with two of those appearances on the massive Main Stage 0 they’re climbing even higher in 2014. They’re ready for it though.

“It’s nice to be back,” offers up the band’s guitarist Max Helyer, ahead of their set, third from the top of tonight’s bill. That’s not all that’s up their sleeves though… “And, you know, we might be darting about on some other stages. Who knows?! It should be good!”

For the five-piece, 2014 has been a more quiet affair in the UK. Having last toured the country back in March, they’ve been taking their Number 1 album ‘Cavalier Youth’ around the world since, but Helyer is sure that their most recent performance on our shores was one for the books.

“Ally Pally was probably one of the best shows that our band’s ever had in our career,” he offers. “I think if people were there, they saw why. I don’t think we’ve ever played tighter as a band and I think the cycle of ‘Cavalier Youth’ has really shaped our band and shows where our band can be potentially in the next five, ten years and this is only just the start for us now. I’m not saying that the other records we did weren’t great, or weren’t milestones in our career, but I think we’ve started to really find where our band is going now and we’re starting to create the best music we’ve ever done. I’m just excited for the future to see what it holds.”

Their massive performances aren’t going to be stopping with today either: the band have also just announced a co-headlining tour with All Time Low, which will be taking in arenas - including The O2 - next February.

“It is at The O2! It’s nice to finally go back and do a headline slot there, whereas last time we played it was supporting Thirty Seconds To Mars. It’s funny what a year and a bit can do. I think we’re just very excited to be playing these rooms. It’s been our band’s ambition for a long time now; we’ve been talking about arenas since ‘Sinners Never Sleep’ but I’m glad we didn’t do it then. We’re very glad that we’ve made the transition now because it feels right; it doesn’t feel rushed, we’re not doing it to please other people, we’re doing it because we truly believe we can go into these venues and sell them out.”
