The Twilight Sad - It Won/t Be Like This All The Time
4 StarsEven more intense.
The Twilight Sad’s greatest weapon is intensity. Ever since debut ‘Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters’, the Scots have amassed a catalogue of bleak but defiant hammer-blows, all punctuated by James Graham’s impassioned vocals, delivered in an unashamedly out-there accent from north of the border. This continues in earnest on new album ‘IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME’.
Unlike the swirling, guitar-led crash of most of the band’s catalogue, their fifth album is anchored by thudding, motorik beats that create a dancier base on which James exorcises his deepest demons, and it’s an even more intense form of communication. Single ‘I/m Not Here (Missing Face)’ is as catchy as it is relentlessly intense, while ‘Let’s Get Lost’ is a sprightly skip - and the record shows that whatever musical direction the band choose to take, it won’t see them lose their unrelenting power.
