‘Two Devils’, the newest single from Nottingham quintet Dog Is Dead, shakes off their reputation for uplifting indie pop by delivering a gorgeously dark and eerie slice of – well, okay, it’s still indie pop, but with an extra added edge.
With soaring “oohs” making up the chorus, and ghostly background echoes to Rob’s vocals, it’s a wonderfully atmospheric track; things start off slow before reaching a climactic height as Rob cries “You tell me there’s a reason / why our love’s collapsed” over and over. Imagery in the lyrics is equally as striking, with not just the references to the Devil but also in lines like ‘And there’s always something crawling between my feet and in my head.’
With the young band heading out on a long tour this month, you can expect this single to be a firm live favourite in no time. In comparison to previous singles like ‘Hands Down’, here there’s an element of growth from the band that seems sincere and real. If the band continue to progress like this, you can expect them to be so much bigger by the end of the year.
‘Two Devils’ is fantastic. Now please guys, just give us an album we can love too.
