Dutch Uncles - Face In

Genre-bending pop.

Let’s face it, when it comes to musical talent, no city in the UK has been as blessed as Manchester. The likes of Ian Curtis, Morrissey, the Gallaghers and of course, Bez, all hail from the realms of Madchester. However, with the unfortunate demise of Britpop, recent offerings have been slightly more unconventional, and Dutch Uncles sit comfortably alongside fellow Mancunians Everything Everything in their purveyance of genre-bending pop.

‘Face In’ is the lead single off of their, as yet untitled, forthcoming album. It’s driven by a relentlessly catchy, bouncy bass line, while the guitars play around it like excited kids at a birthday party, before the chorus brings them all together as Duncan Wallis’ floaty voice asks ‘Could I get my dress on?’. There’s no doubting it: Dutch Uncles want you to get on your best clothes, and follow them to the indie disco.

In the bridge, the song descends into chaos, all crashing drums and swooshing effects. Despite the band having a reputation for using complex time signatures influenced by prog-rock, ‘Face In’ is one of their more accessible pop tracks, with a big nod towards XTC. If this track is anything to go by, there could well be another name to add to the Manchester hall of fame.
