Following the well-received release of their latest album - ‘Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will’ - earlier this year, Mogwai are now presenting the world with their latest offerings in the form of ‘Earth Division’.
Easily described as pretty and quiet, the four-track EP is certainly a lot more subdued than their previous works. Kicking things off with ‘Get To France’, a classical number infused with piano and strings, the band establish from the offset that this EP is a little different, a little bit special.
Next up, ‘Hound Of Winter’ brings a folky aspect to the ever-expanding table. Still backed by the epic, emotional strings that work so well, the track features soft vocals that perfectly complement it. ‘Drunk And Crazy’, as expected given the title, echoes classic Mogwai with its guitar-driven, heavily-distorted, post-rock instrumental status giving way to interludes of the classical piano and strings that feature throughout the disc.
‘Does This Always Happen?’, the last and probably strongest track, is melancholy and progressive - a sad reflection of a song that ends the collection beautifully.
