Golden Silvers - Magic Touch / Another Universe

The right producer could turn these guys into a force to be reckoned with.

Golden Silvers

are trying desperately hard to be un-cool. This can be seen from the way they dress on stage to the way that they attempt to craft contemporary pop songs from an annoyingly cheesy ‘80s template. Despite this however, Golden Silvers aren’t half bad, as can be witnessed by the multiple facets displayed in this double A-Side.

‘Magic Touch’ has multi layered keyboards and organs over a funky disco rhythm accompanied by some quiet nice vocal harmonies, that could be improved if the lead singer’s voice was slightly less mockney sounding. However, the stop-start routine that so many other bands have used to great success impedes the song slightly here, becoming repetitive.

‘Another Universe’ on the other hand is in the vain of some of the worst overproduced piano pop balladry. Yet it manages to be both floaty and charming, adding stabs of electro-pop to break up the flow of the and cease what would otherwise have been monotony. Strangely it works and the fact that it’s incredibly cheesy doesn’t stop it from being kinda good.

This being Golden Silvers second proper release it’s understandable that they’re not right at the top of their game yet and ‘Magic Touch’ and ‘Another Universe’ show that they’ve got ideas to spare, they just need to collate them. The right producer could turn these guys into a force to be reckoned with.
