It’s like having every nerve and sense available to the average human, and seeing it thrown into a blender. That’s the only reasonable way to describe Hookworms’ bustling, skittering and skizzing routine. They leap into the gut. They throw everything into the fire in one fatal blow. Distortion’s just childsplay for these guys. Every inch of being is thrown into ‘The Impasse’ - it’s a deadly dust storm that’s come out of nowhere. There’s an initial five second or so calm that begins this single - the lead track from new album ‘The Hum’ - and it’s about as deceiving as seeing water ripple slightly before a giant tyrannosaurus rex stomps through the scenery.
Hookworms in recorded form will never quite fully match the normality-rinsing experience of seeing them live. But just like with fellow freakish types Holy Fuck, it’s not going to stop them from trying. ‘The Impasse’ is a grossly short-lived burst of expression. It seizes the conscience before throwing it out into the wilderness without a second’s warning.
Hookworms’ ‘The Hum’ album is out 10th November via Weird World.
