is a solid gold pop song, and definitely one of the singles of the year. We’re aware that we’re adding to a ridiculously high mountain of hype when we say that, but it’s all so very true. Like all good pop this sounds upbeat and joyous on the surface, with a chorus so huge it will certainly knock Girls Aloud off of their lofty perch as queens of UK pop. “I’m gonna take you out tonight / I’m gonna make you feel alright” it goes. It’s a winner.
Then later the song reveals its true self, as the multi-talented Miss Hesketh sings “When strangers only make you feel apart / You never, ever felt so far from home” and the glimmering synthesisers take on a gloomier tone. Understandably, due to La Roux’s recent success (and the fact that they’re both girls making pop music) there’s going to be some comparison between the two, yet where the red haired one’s music can often feel a little retro or sterile, Little Boot’s music feels positively fresh and alive.
Little Boots’ talent is obvious from this song, there’s multiple layers of electronics and sounds that if allowed can be fully a immersive experience and a distraction from the pure pop joy that will make ‘New In Town’ radio fodder. This lady is truly a star and has come about at a time when one is needed more than ever to save us from the current dirge that is the pop charts.
